AT&T UNIX Streams, for example, clearly presaged SEDA by some two decades and has greatly informed my own efforts in this area as well. In the open-source world, the best examples of other solutions to the same problems can probably be found in myriad research operating systems; the networking code in the BSD family has evolved greatly since I was involved in one of the earliest SMP ports, but is less general and less instructive than some alternatives, and the Linux code will simply rot your brain."
