Was für meinereinen der C64 gewesen sein hätte können, das war für Donald Knuth die IBM 650, wie im heute der Rinner'schen Bibliothek entlehnten Selected Papers on Computer Science zu lesen steht.

Ebenso beeindruckt wie von der Maschine an sich war Knuth von der Implementierung des SOAP II-Assemblers, welcher von Stan Poley 1955 im [create Watson Lab] entwickelt worden war. 1974 meinte er in seiner Turing Award-Lecture, dass es letztlich die Ästhetik des Poley'schen Codes, dessen schiere Schönheit gewesen sei, die ihn für die Kunst der Programmierung begeistert hatten:

"I can still remember the great thrill it was for me to read the listing of Stan Poley's SOAP II assembly program in 1958; [...] at the time it meant a great deal to me to see how elegant a system program could be, especially by comparison with the heavy-handed coding found in other listings I had been studying at the same time. The possibility of writing beautiful programs, even in assembly language, is what got me hooked on programming in the first place."
