While I still find Amazon's personalized elements on the frontpage to be much less useful than recommendations attached to individual products (as I wrote a couple of days ago - 2005-12-02-sepede), shared accounts and gift purchases really aren't much of a problem at all, at least on Amazon. It's possible to specify precisely which purchases and product views should factor into recommendations - and which shouldn't. I wonder what percentage of the customer base actually uses that kind of fine-tuning, though ...
