Problem: When "live" indexing is turned on, adds and removes get progressively slower with the number of triples present.

Solution: For single adds and removes this is not much of a problem. For bulk operations (where bulk is defined as > 10 ;-) it is usually faster to switch off indexing and rebuild the index after the changes have been made. Turning off indexing of course junks the index (i.e. makes it temporarily unusable for concurrent processes).

Rules of thumb:

Subject-based matches are very fast (thousands/sec).

Index-based reads cause (of course) the index to be loaded. The bigger the index, the worse. (Not usually a big problem).

The process that junks an index is responsible for rebuilding it.

If a result is attainable in acceptable time both with and without involving the indices, the index-less version should be used.
