How to install Vanilla on your desktop computer or server

There are two options to set up Vanilla:

Option A) Running Microsoft Windows 95 or higher, you can use VanillaSBX. It installs everything needed (Vanilla, REBOL/Core and Apache) to start your own Vanilla site.

NOTE: DUE TO A BUG WITHIN MICROSOFT'S INTERNET INFORMATION SERVER (IIS), VANILLA DOES NOT WORK WITH THIS WEBSERVER.

Option B) If you use an alternative operating system (Linux, MacOS, Amiga, Be, ...) or want more control over your installation, please follow this instruction:

Step 1: Download Vanilla (31 kB) to a directory of your choice (eg /var/www/ [all samples for Debian Linux]). Unpack the file (eg tar -pxvzf vanilla-0.5.2pre01.tar.gz) and remember the final path as your vanilla-root (eg /var/www/vanilla).
Step 2: REBOL/Core is available for many operating systems: Windows, Linux, Free BSD, MacOS, Amiga, Be, ... Download REBOL/Core (180 kB) to a directory of your choice (eg to /usr/local/rebol) and unpack it (eg tar -pxvzf core042.tar.gz). Make sure that the file rebol has the permission to be executed (eg chmod 755 /usr/local/rebol/rebol)
Step 3: Download Apache or any other web server supporting the execution of CGI scripts and install it.
Step 4: From your vanilla-root directory, move the two files vanilla.r and vanilla.r.conf to the directory where CGI executables reside on your web server (eg /usr/lib/cgi-bin). Make sure that vanilla.r has the permission to be executed (eg chmod 755 /usr/lib/cgi-bin/vanilla.r)
Step 5: In the vanilla.r file, adapt the topmost line with the path to your REBOL/Core interpreter (eg #!/usr/local/rebol/rebol -cs).
Step 6: In the vanilla.r.conf file adapt the vanilla-root (eg vanilla-root: "/var/www/").
Then adapt the vanilla-space-identifier: This is used for hashing purposes only, so don't put yourself under enormous pressure to be creative. The id should nonetheless be somewhat unique for improved security. A long, senseless sentence in your native language should do well here. Beware: No linebreaks are tolerated.
Step 7: Test your Vanilla site by typing http://localhost/cgi-bin/vanilla.r - or similar according to your setup - in the URL line of your web browser and hit Enter.

If you see the vanilla-user-register-master page, you won.

Else you probably see a "Internal Server Error: The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request."

Something has gone wrong :-( To find the reason of the error efficiently, it is recommended to edit the vanilla.r file. Find the first line which says

```
and delete the semicolon. Hit reload in your web browser and you may now see a more helpful error message.
