I'm not sure whether that particular release will have any impact (given that it's little more than a souped-up video player), but the forthcoming 1.1 sounds interesting; it's slated to come with a rather rich* subset of .NET and, hopefully, a sensible model for creating user interface components. Microsoft is also supporting Novell in their cloning project, Moonlight; for the full scoop, see Miguel de Icaza's announcement.
