Are supposed to "leverage and extend the JavaBeans component model to provide a rich object-oriented transactional environment for developers building enterprise applications." [src]

EJB was created in order to (semi-)standardize technologies and methodologies needed to build applications which have to be distributed over several servers (in order to increase scalability and reliability of the overall system).

There are basically three types of EJBs - [create Session Beans], [create Message-Driven Beans] and [create Entity Beans].
