The release version of Sun DOE, discontinued as Sun restuctured its software strategy around Java in 1997. NEO, specifically, has been replaced by EJB.

The champion of NEO at the company was Bud Tribble (who, of course, knew a lot about the virtues of distributed objects, him being the chief architect of NeXTStep — which has had [create PDO] for quite some time then) .

NEO competed with middleware from [create Bea] and [create Iona].
