In the early 1950s, assisted Wassily Leontief to have his "input-output" model calculated on the computers of the time at Harvard University. Taught the world's first course on using computers for business applications. As an assistant professor of Applied Mathematics, designed APL as a powerful notation for teaching data processing (1957-1960). Joined IBM to work on APL-related research and development in 1960. Became an [create IBM Fellow] in recognition of that work in 1971. In 1980, moved on to work on APL extensions at Canadian I.P. Sharp, which he retired from around 1988. In the late 1980s and early 1990s co-designed what is now known as J with Roger Hui.

Recipient of the Turing Award.
