What platform do you want to use for your Next Big Desktop Application Hit?

Meine persönlichen "Anforderungen" an die Wunschplattform entbehren ohnehin jeden Sinn für Realitäten jedweder Art ... schlanke Runtime (Redistribution in unter einem Megabyte sollte denkbar sein), möglichst auf allen Systemen laufend (aber zumindest auf Win32, Linux, OS X), dabei so easy wie REBOL/View (wobei anzumerken ist, dass die Easyness bei komplexeren Applikationen schnell abnimmt, was vor allem der praktisch nonexistenten Dokumentation zu verdanken ist) und so leistungsfähig wie WinForms samt GDI+ (bzw. Swing samt Java2D) ...

Java? — "Basically, you launch 10 non-trivial applications [jEdit, Anm. d. Red.] on your machine. Do it. On both my 256 Megs Linux box and my 128 Megs brand-new laptop, this experiment leads to a disaster. Under Windows 98 (the laptop), Windows broke and I had to reboot (admittedly, it made it very far in the process). What's my point? Well, if I can't launch 10 apps on a decent PC, then the software is wrong. Since jEdit itself, I'm sure you will all agree, is a fine app... then what is to blame? Java itself? I suspect not. [...] My beef with Swing is that it is a framework that doesn't allow you to write lightweight applications. I claim that it will prevent Java from ever "making it big" client-side."

Ich glaube dass Mozilla als Plattform für Client Applications ziemlich unschlagbar ist. Rocksolide, X-Platform, scriptbar mit XML und JavaScript. Schon mal näher angeschaut?

Ausserdem (in not completely unrelated news und natürlich vollkommen subjektiv) finde ich: Wer IE/Outlook Express statt Mozilla verwendet, surft und mailt dysfunktional (sitze nämlich grad an einem Win2k-PC).

Das mit dem XUL ist schon lange in meiner Pipeline, wenn man nur mehr Zeit haette.

Das mit Java stimmt, liegt aber nicht nur an Swing. Ich versuche gerade einen Mail Indexer zu schreiben, der mittels JavaSpaces kommuniziert. JavaSpaces braucht 3 oder 4 Java Server (codebase, service, ....), James mit Avalon ist auch ganz dicke. Wenn dann noch IDEA (die beste Java IDE) laeuft, bekomme ich unter Linux Out-ot-memory errors, da er keine threads mehr starten kann. Linux + Java + mehrere Apps = Mist.
(512mb, 1ghz Athlon btw.)

in Sachen small footprint wäre da eventuell auch wxLua. www.luascript.thersgb.net/index.htm.. ;)
aber ernsthaft, wxWindows ist durchaus zu beachten, und es gibt bindings zu mächtig vielen Scriptsprachen (wxJS ist leider noch frühes alpha)

kann mich da nur wirklich anschliessen, naemlich wie folgt: habe moz/xul auch schon lange in der pipeline, die ersten kleinen gehversuche waren jedoch ziemlich erfreulich.

das mit java teile auch ich ;) und IDEA ist im vergleich zum [create JBuilder] ja sogar noch brav. mein lieblingsding war da immer: der jbuilder hat mit der zeit soviel speicher/threads gefressen, dass er: (1) nix mehr debuggen konnte, aber auch (2) nix mehr einfach nur compilen und vor allem (3) schliessen wollte er sich auch nicht mehr lassen (out of memory). java vm wegschiessen ist undankbar aber the only way out.

re wxWindows: auf wxWindows wuerd ich nicht unbedingt setzen (auch wenn perl, python und lua bindings da sind). wxw gibts jetzt seit 1991 oder so und wirklich durchsetzen hat sich das nie koennen - es ist einfach nicht wirklich angenehm.

interessant ist sicher auch noch Sash (wenn auch linux/win only) - aber keine ahnung wie sehr die ibm da noch dahintersteht. und mozilla kann das meiste eigtl besser ;)

can i recommend SWT (part of the Eclipse project, www.eclipse.org) for Serious Java Desktop Apps. It's very good., making widget draws using native calls. Fast and efficient, it makes Java usable.

re funzel yesterday: jup, das mit den paar tagen zurueckblicken ist muehsam ;) eigentlich gehoert ein Jini snip angelegt und die ganze diskussion dorthin refactored. da kann man dann auch ganz gemuetlich wiki style plaudern.

angebot: du legst das jini snip an, ich refactor die discussion ;) [obwohl sie eh schon am ende ist]
