radio.weblogs.com/0106165/2002/04/04.html#a4"Having no money and fearing that an office might jeopardize the project’s secrecy, we armed ourselves with Muni tokens, Handi-Wipes and Ricochet modems and set out for lands unknown..."

Oddpost is easily the slickest piece of DHTML I've ever come to touch.

In semi-related news: Bad times spawn great start-ups — "[create Walt Disney] lost an acting job as a movie extra and started his cartoon company in a Hollywood garage. The timing: the 1923-24 recession. Last month, Ethan Diamond and Iain Lamb launched their San Francisco dot-com amid another recession. They had quit a tech firm that took an unappealing turn. Crazy? Not really. Sixteen of the 30 corporations in the Dow Jones industrial average trace their birth to recessions."

My German isn't quite good enough to be sure I understand Traumwind and Andi, but I have tried Oddpost from here and it is startlingly fast. And the idea of `one place for EMail' regardless of which machine you happen to be on at the moment is also a good one. However, that machine had better have a 100% availability (or nearly) or it will be more of a hinderance in the access process than a help.

Also the `management' facilities seem to be nothing of particular interest, and if you think about it the `random subject generator' that they tout would surely play havoc with someone who was using Six Degrees to manage their mail.

So far it looks to me like Zoot is probably one of the few `interesting games in town' to help manage EMail. I just don't think that things that depend on the Subject header are likely to (ultimately) be very effective...

well apperently the performance of the Oddpost server is very variable. I only tried the demo and it wouldn't load in 10 minutes.... might try again on Monday
