When we spent some time in Shanghai and Chongqing some time ago, our guide Peter Pan told us, that when the government blocked google.com the first time, it took students about 2 days to largely reconfigure and started to use google.de and google.fi, both of which were not blocked, because the government specialist were so westernized that right to left parsing with a substitute all pattern before the first dot had not properly ocurred to them.

It shows which pages appear in both result sets, i.e. 0. For that particular term, they're "filtering" quite comprehensively.

S.: The little man's opinion would be much appreciated. When it comes to China and its sociodynamics, I'm not even sure I know that I don't know anything.

i see. however, more confusion on my side: is this the spelling chinese people would use for the particular term? (or: does this really matter, resp.?) does the picture tell anything more than about quantity and ranking? does this really give a concise impression about google's "filtering" activities in china? (maybe another search term would be helpful...)

I doubt that Chinese people would use the Latin alphabet at all. The visualization allows you to quickly figure out what's present in one set and not in the other. It's neither 100% precise (mostly because of URL normalization issues) nor do missing connections imply censoring - Google's ranking varies _a lot_ depending on what language version you're using.
