Fantastic fantastic (for many reasons).Ian Bicking on Logo-the-language. (He's the creator of PyLogo.)

I discovered surprisingly late in the process a. that Logo was created as a Lisp dialect and b. how amazingly similar REBOL is to Logo (mainly because I didn't really know Logo at all; I guess Tom Fürstner could've told me all along); b. should not come as a big surprise to people who happen to know that Carl Sassenrath also created Amiga Logo earlier in his life. Proposed ECMAScript 4th Edition - Language Overview

"We omit tedious details."

This is one funky language.

From the announcement: "This paper is not a spec, it is *just* a detailed overview. Some features may be cut, others may be changed, and numerous details remain to be worked out, but by and large this is what TG1 expects the language to look like."

Thanks for the nice Logo link. Ian tackles a lot of what is interesting about Logo-the-language and almost everything of it is directly related to REBOL as well. Comparing those two languages, one of the main parts to take away is that Logo uses dynamic scope and, as Ian says, "a nice side effect of dynamic scoping is that EVAL works pretty well."

A nicely-working EVAL is pretty essential for Logo's lack of special forms but dynamic scoping is widely disregarded these days (rightly so). This tension needs to be resolved by any modern language in Logo's tradition. Either by acknowledging a dynamically scoped nature up-front or by clearly stating an alternate scoping behaviour (and the corresponding EVAL semantics). Unfortunately, with REBOL, neither is the case.

I wonder whether much is won by acknowledging it up-front ;-). And, I promise, one day I'll take detailed notes when discussing REBOL's scoping; I keep forgetting what's so weird about it (which _I_ take to mean that, in practice, it's not so weird at all).
